RIVER RATS 4, SOUND TIGERS 3

Jan 19, 2008

The Sound Tigers scored three power-play goals tonight against the Albany River Rats but it would come up one goal short as the River Rats beat the Sound Tigers by the score of 4-3.

The River Rats jumped out to a 1-0 lead almost half-way through the opening period when Jakub Petruzalek one-timed a back-door pass from Keith Aucoin for his sixth goal of the season.  Brett Carson had the second assist on the goal.  The Sound Tigers would answer with a power-play goal of their own while on a 5-on-3.  Jeff Tambellini, playing on the point while on the man-advantage, fed a pass to Ben Walter in the right circle.  Walter crept in from the corner and put a pass right on the tape of Trevor Smith who was parked just outside the crease.  Smith was able to tap the puck past River Rats' starting goalie, John Grahame to tie the score at 1-1.  With the Sound Tigers on a delayed penalty, Albany kept control of the puck with the extra attacker and regained the lead at 2-1.  Pat Dwyer threw a shot on goal from the slot that deflected off a Sound Tiger and fluttered over the shoulder of Dubielewicz.  Mark Flood and Brandon Nolan assisted on Dwyer's fifth tally of the season.

Drew Fata would even the score at two while the Sound Tigers were on their third power-play of the second period.  Ben Walter sent a pass to Fata at the point and went to the net for a screen or rebound.  Fata hesitated and then sent a wrist shot that went through Grahame for Fata's third goal of the season.  Frans Nielsen also had an assist on the goal.  With the Sound Tigers looking like they were back in the game, it was former Sound Tiger Brandon Nolan who would put Albany back on top, 16:13 into the middle frame.  Tim Conboy started a regroup in the neutral zone for the River Rats and saw Nolan streaking off the bench at the far blue-line.  Conboy fired a pass to Nolan springing him in all alone on Dubielewicz.  Nolan quickly snapped a shot past the Sound Tiger net-minder's blocker for the 3-2 lead.

In the third, Nolan would score his second goal of the game and team leading 18th goal of the season 2:54 into the period.  Aucoin assisted on the goal making the score 4-2.  The Sound Tigers would tack on one more goal 13:35 into the final period when Nielsen blasted a slap-shot from the point on the power-play over the shoulder of Grahame, cutting the score to 4-3.  Jeff Tambellini and Kyle Okposo had the helpers.  The come-back was stopped a goal short as the River Rats clamped down in their defensive zone stopping any scoring chances the Sound Tigers tried to create, leaving the River Rats with the victory, 4-3.

Dubielewicz finished with 18 saves on 22 shots while Grahame stopped 42 of the 45 shots he faced.  The Sound Tigers three goals all came on the power-play as they finished 3-for-nine.  Albany was 1-for-6 on the man-advantage.

The Sound Tigers will conclude their road-trip in Portland on Monday at 1 p.m.

3 Stars
1. Brandon Nolan - 2 goals
2. Keith Aucoin - 2 assists
3. John Grahame - 42 saves earning the victory in goal
Honorable Mention: Ben Walter - Assists on the Sound Tigers first two goals

Dubie Returns to Island:  After tonight's game, Wade Dubielewicz jumped in a town car and headed back to Long Island.  Dubielewicz will rejoin the Islanders for their next game on Monday at the Nassau Coliseum when the River Rats' NHL affiliate, the Carolina Hurricanes visit the Islanders.

He's a Hockey Player:  Sound Tigers defenseman, Andy Sertich showed just how tough he is when he took a hit from behind from Jordan Fox.  Sertich eventually got up and did not miss a shift.  He was on the power-play his next shift and had his best chance of the game when he rung a one-timer off the right post.  Fox was assessed a game misconduct for boarding.
