Watch Highlights

The Sound Tigers dominated the first period of play but three goals in the middle frame by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins helped put an end to their three-game winning streak as the Penguins beat the Sound Tigers, 4-2.

Ben WalterBen Walter opened the scoring just a minute and 40 seconds into the opening period when he scored his 18th goal of the season. Drew Fata fed a pass to his defense partner, Scott Ford at the right point where he sent a shot on goal. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton starting goalie, John Curry made the first save but Walter was there to grab the rebound, swiftly pull the puck around Curry and slide it into the net for the 1-0 lead. Jamie Fraser would make it 2-0 in favor of the Sound Tigers, while the team was on the power-play, with just under two minutes to play in the first. Walter fed a nice back-door pass to Fraser at the left post for the easy tap in tally. Jeff Tambellini also had an assist on Fraser’s seventh goal of the season.

The tides turned in the second period as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton rattled off three straight goals, taking the 3-2 lead into the third period. Nathan Smith had two of the three markers, his 19th and 20th of the season. Alex Goligoski scored what would become the game-winner at the 18:32 mark, his ninth of the season off assists from Kurtis McLean and Tim Brent.

Connor James would seal the victory for the Penguins in the third when he converted a 3-on-1 opportunity for his ninth tally of the season. Tim Wallace had the lone helper on the goal, closing out the scoring at 4-2.

Morrison suffered the loss while stopping 26 of the 30 shots fired at him tonight. Curry had 31 saves on 33 shots. The Sound Tigers were 1-for-3 on the man-advantage and were perfect on the penalty kill going 4-for-4.

Tomorrow evening, the Sound Tigers will close out their three-game home-stand against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

3 Stars

1. Nathan Smith – Scored two goals
2. Connor James – Scored a goal and added an assist to each of Smith’s goals
3. Ben Walter – Opened the scoring in the first period and had the main assist on Fraser’s goal
Honorable Mention: Dennis Bonvie – A fan “favorite” over the years in Bridgeport, Bonvie was with the Penguins in their last regular season game of the season. This is Bonvie’s final year before he retires at the end of the season

Game Operations: During the first intermission, three young fans got to roll two giant dice. The little girl rolled a 10 and it was the highest combined total so she won tickets to see the Sound Tigers take on the Philadelphia Phantoms on Friday April 4th. The game will have the Wiggles characters in attendance.

Leading the Way: Ben Walter loves to play the Penguins. Though Walter hasn’t played in every single game between the two teams, he has more points against the Penguins than any other Sound Tiger. In six games against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, Walter has three goals and five assists.

Up and Back: The Sound Tigers lost Steve Regier, Tim Jackman, and Matthew Spiller to the Islanders for the Islanders game tonight in Philadelphia. Though the Islanders lost 4-3 in a shootout, former Sound Tigers Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo, Blake Comeau and Wade Dubielewicz helped keep it close. Comeau scored in the second period, and Kyle Okposo tallied an assist on the goal. Nielsen put the Islanders in the lead in the third period with a goal, and Dubielewicz turned aside 51 saves.

Sertich: Andy Sertich, who suffered a big hit in the third period and was taken off the ice for precautionary reasons, is in good condition. The main blow from the hit delivered by Tim Wallace injured his already sore shoulder and he left in a sling. Sertich was conscious and seen walking around the locker-room after the game.
