Watch Highlights

In front of the largest crowd this season of 8,191 at Arena at Harbor Yard, the Sound Tigers fell to the Hartford Wolf Pack in a shootout, 4-3. Jeff Tambellini recorded two assists and Ben Walter scored and picked up a helper in the loss. The Sound Tigers did pick up an important point in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the East Division.

Above ShotThe Sound Tigers wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead over their intrastate rivals. Walter received a pass from Tambellini and buried his 19th goal of the season between the five-hole of Wolf Pack starting goalie Miika Wiikman. Tambellini chased the puck into the left corner and fired it into the slot where Walter scored from just above the crease. Tim Jackman also picked up a helper. The assist was Tambellini’s third point since rejoining the Sound Tigers after an 11-game stint with the Islanders.

Just 39 seconds later the Sound Tigers tacked onto their lead when Trevor Smith scored his 15th goal of the season. Joey MacDonald moved the puck up the ice to Matthew Spiller who fed Steve Regier in the neutral zone. Regier chipped the puck up the near boards to Smith where he picked it up and snapped a shot over Wiikman’s glove.

Nine minutes later, the Wolf Pack jumped on the board on a goal by Lauri Korpikoski, his 21st goal of the season. Pierre Parenteau and Greg Moore had the assists on the tally to cut the Sound Tigers lead in half, 2-1.

Huge CrowdGreg Moore tied the game at 2-2 for the Wolf Pack 33 seconds into the middle frame. The goal was his 26th of the season. Pierre Parenteau and Andrew Hutchinson assisted on the tying goal.

Parenteau gave the Wolf Pack their first lead of the game, 3-2, at 18:11 of the second. Parenteau scored the power-play goal after walking into the left circle and blasting a slap-shot over the right shoulder of MacDonald. Thomas Pock picked up a helper, while Hutchinson collected his second assist of the game.

The Sound Tigers continue the trend of early-period goals, tying the score 2:43 into the third. Tambellini grabbed the puck along the right half-boards and skated towards the Hartford net. Tambellini hesitated and found Jamie Fraser breaking back-door for the easy tap-in goal, his eighth of the season.

MacDonald kept the score knotted at 3-3, sending the game into overtime by denying numerous scoring opportunities late in the period.
The game was decided in a shootout where MacDonald stopped the first four Wolf Pack shooters before he was beaten by Owens and Korpikoski in the sixth round. Walter converted the lone marker for the Sound Tigers after dangling the puck at the bottom of the slot and bringing the puck back to his forehand for the snapshot over Wiikman’s shoulder.

MacDonald finished the game with 41 saves in 65 minutes of action, while Wiikman stopped 33 of 36 Sound Tiger shots including the overtime session. The Sound Tigers killed six of the seven penalties in the game and finished 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.
