We’ve put ourselves on the line with the top 6-10 Sound Tiger games this season so here goes with our choices for the top five games of the year.
5. 1/12/08 vs. Springfield Falcons (4-2 Win) Highlights Photo Gallery –
Kyle Okposo’s decision to leave the University of Minnesota half-way through the season to begin his pro career could not have worked out any better for the Islanders’ top prospect. He began his professional career on January 11th in Binghamton and contributed immediately with two assists. The Sound Tigers returned home that night after their 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Senators to face-off against the Falcons on Saturday for Okposo’s home-debut. To go along with the team’s loyal beat writer Mike Fornabaio from the Connecticut Post, the night was a media frenzy with Newsday, MSG, the Daily News and numerous Islander Blog Box writers attending the game. Okposo would not disappoint. The Sound Tigers took a 1-0 lead on Kip Brennan’s second goal of the season in the first period. In the second, Okposo would complete a pretty give-and-go play with Frans Nielsen to record his third assist of the season in only his second game. About six minutes later, Okposo would make his own history when he walked over the Springfield lined and uncorked a slap-shot that soared over the shoulder of Falcons’ net-minder Devan Dubnyk for the first professional goal of his career. Okposo would assist on Scott Ford’s goal later in the period to finish the game with three points. One of the more memorable moments of the night was hearing PA announcer Adam Goodman lose his voice while bellowing Okposo’s name as the night’s first star.
4. 12/26/07 vs. Hershey Bears (5-4 Win) Highlights Photo Gallery –
The day after Christmas, Sean Bentivoglio gave the fans that came out to see the Sound Tigers a special gift when he scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play in regulation. It was a two-goal trade off all night between the Sound Tigers and Hershey Bears that finally saw the Sound Tigers out-race the Bears for a 5-4 victory. Frans Nielsen and Jeff Tambellini each had a goal in the first period to give the Sound Tigers the 2-0 lead. In the second, the Bears answered with two of their own from Jason Morgan and Kyle Wilson, tying the score at two going into the third period. Tambellini would take the 3-2 lead for the team and Sean Bentivoglio added to it with a pretty backhand shot past the left pad of Hershey goaltender Daren Machesney. With ten minutes remaining in regulation, the Sound Tigers seemed to have a command on the game with a 4-2 lead but the Bears did not stop attacking as Jamie Hunt and Ben Clymer scored goals a minute apart to knot the score at four with less than three minutes to play. The game seemed destined for overtime but a Matthew Spiller long breakout pass to Bentivoglio sprung the speedy winger from the neutral zone in alone on Machesney. Bentivoglio shielded Bears’ defenseman Jonathan Paiment from the puck and cut through the crease causing Machesney to drop to his knees. With Paiment making a last ditch effort to haul down the Sound Tigers’ rookie winger, Bentivoglio turned and snapped a shot over Machesney to record the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play.
3. 4/9/08 @ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (4-3 OT Win) Highlights – The
Sound Tigers received a boost from the New York Islanders for the final six games of the season as Blake Comeau, Kyle Okposo, Drew Fata, Mike Morrison and Jeremy Colliton all returned to the Sound Tigers on April 4th for their stretch run. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were one of the teams ahead of the Sound Tigers in the East Division as they were fighting for every point they could win in an effort to make the playoffs. Two minutes into the third period, Matt Keith scored his 13th tally of the season to give the Sound Tigers a 3-0 lead. It seemed as if the Sound Tigers had the win in hand but three straight goals from the Penguins made the Sound Tigers’ bench uneasy entering overtime. Comeau returning to the team was a blessing in disguise, which often times is not the case with players returning to the minors after a taste of the NHL. The leadership and overall abilities he came back with rose to another level from spending most of the year with the Islanders. In the extra session, Trevor Smith took a pass from Comeau behind the goal-line and allowed for the Sound Tigers’ power-play to set-up. Smith sent the puck back to the Comeau in the left circle where he blasted a slap-shot through Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goalie John Curry to win the game 4-3.
2. 4/4/08 vs. Philadelphia Phantoms (6-5 OT Win) Highlights Photo Gallery –
Jeff Tambellini had a career year for the Sound Tigers and on April 4th, he tied Blake Comeau for the most points in a game with five. Colton Fretter’s goal that opened the scoring three minutes into the game was the lone marker for the Sound Tigers that Tambellini did not have a point on. At the end of the first period, Tambellini entered the Sound Tigers locker-room with a goal and an assist coming on a Ben Walter goal, which gave the Sound Tigers the 3-2 lead. Philadelphia answered with two goals in the middle frame to grab the 4-3 lead but Jamie Fraser’s back-door tap in goal on a feed from Tambellini tied the score at four with 20 minutes to play. In the third, Tambellini opened the scoring when he one-timed a terrific pass from Tyler Haskins that snuck through the legs of a sprawled out Phantom defenseman and past Martin Houle for the 5-4 lead. The energy was high in the building as the Sound Tigers needed the win to climb two points closer to the Hershey Bears for the fourth and final playoff spot but Philadelphia would put one last hiccup in the Sound Tigers’ hopes of victory. With only two minutes left, Ryan Potulny tied the scored for the Phantoms at five to swing the momentum in favor of Philadelphia. As both teams sat on the bench during the one-minute intermission between the third period and overtime, you could tell that the Sound Tigers were not going to let this game slip away. Dustin Kohn led the puck out of the zone and snapped a pass to Tambellini who was flying through the neutral zone. Tambellini came in on the lower half-wall and wristed a shot over Houle’s glove to win the game 6-5 on his third goal of the night.
1. 1/26/08 vs. Philadelphia Phantoms (4-3 SO Win) Highlights Photo Galley –
There is no better feeling than staring defeat in the face and clawing your back to victory. On January 26th, the Sound Tigers did just that when they came from behind to beat the Phantoms 4-3 in a shootout. As the two teams entered the final eight minutes of play, Philadelphia was clinging to a 3-2 lead due to Jonathan Matsumoto’s 13th tally of the season. To make the obstacle even steeper to overcome, Drew Fata took a two-minute roughing penalty leaving his team short-handed in the final minute of play. Head Coach Jack Capuano pulled Sound Tigers’ starter Mike Morrison and sent an all-offensive unit of Jeff Tambellini, Steve Regier, Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo and Ben Walter onto the ice. Steve Regier controlled the play and led the puck up ice where he sent a saucer pass to an open Tambellini at the top of the right circle. Tambellini blasted a one-timer past the glove of Philadelphia starting goaltender Brian Boucher to tie the score at three. Neither team was able to score the winner in overtime so the game was decided in a shootout. Nielsen and Trevor Smith were the first two shooters for the Sound Tigers and did not miss, giving their team the 2-0 advantage. Okposo, the third shooter for the Sound Tigers, made one of the craziest moves this season when he came in with the puck on his back-hand, transferred to his fore-hand where he faked a shot and then pulled the puck on his back-hand and tried to chip the puck over Boucher’s pad but could not finish. Morrison was the difference in the contest, stopping all four shooters he faced helping the Sound Tigers earn two big points in a game that looked as though the Sound Tigers would suffer a loss.
