The New York Islanders have announced the signing of defenseman Joe Callahan to a one-year, two-way contract.
Callahan was one of the top defensemen for the Portland Pirates finishing the regular season with a goal and 23 assists in 65 games, while compiling a +2 rating. In the Calder Cup Playoffs, the Pirates made it to the Eastern Conference where they were defeated by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Callahan led the team defense in points with a goal and 11 assists for 12 points in 18 games.
The Brockton, MA native has totaled 298 career AHL games and registered seven goals and 52 assists for 59 points to go along with 290 penalty minutes. Since 2003-04, Callahan has spent parts of four seasons with the Springfield Falcons, Utah Grizzlies and San Antonio Rampage.
Callahan also played three seasons for Yale University compiling 11 goals and 33 assists for a total of 44 points.
