MINI-CAMP DAY 3
Jul 16, 2008
Connecticut hockey, once a small dot on the hockey map, has slowly grown into a power-house for producing talented hockey players. Chris Drury from Trumbull plays for the New York Rangers and Ryan Shannon from Darien wore the Vancouver Canucks jersey this past season.
Hoping to join that list is former West Haven High School Blue Devil, better known as a "Westie", Joe Pereira who is a sophomore at Boston University skating at this week's camp.
“I was extremely excited to receive the call to come and compete at camp for the Islanders,” Pereira said. “There are a lot of great players here and I’m hoping to take this experience and go back to BU to have a good year.”
Pereira competed in two state championships with West Haven but was beaten both years by Drury’s alma-mater, Fairfield Prep. After three years at W.H.S., Pereira was admitted into South Kent Preparatory where he completed two years before going to Boston University. He also played for the Northern Wings and the West Haven Youth Hockey.
“I have great memories of playing in West Haven at the Bennett rink,” Pereira said. “I never tried to be a fan favorite by scoring big goals with toe-drags or being flashy, I just wanted to work hard in the corners and be energetic to help the team win.”
That game-plan earned him a spot with the Boston University Terriers where he scored nine points in 30 games during his freshman year last season. Pereira knew that the opportunity to play for Terrier coach Jack Parker would benefit his style of play.
“I know if I work hard on and off the ice for coach (Jack) Parker I will be rewarded,” Pereira said. “He is a real “Player’s Coach” because he knows how to deal with each member of the team whether that’s by yelling at you or with a pat on the back.”
Pereira remembers the days of the New Haven Beast and Knights where he skated during the intermissions for the mini-game. His favorite player was Keith Dupee who played for the Knights in the United Hockey League scoring 27 points in 41 games.
The possibility of playing hockey in Connecticut has definitely popped into the 21year-old’s mind, especially after competing at this week’s camp with Sound Tiger coaches Jack Capuano and Pat Bingham looking on.
“Playing in the NHL is obviously the goal of all of ours and to start my professional career in Bridgeport would really be incredible,” Pereira said. “I have some more developing to do but I’m looking forward to my future. To have the opportunity for my friends and family to travel 15 minutes down the road to Bridgeport and see me play instead of all over world would be a really fun experience.”
